1. Keep curtains/shades
draw or closed at night and/or away from home to limit would be thieves
from knowing when you are home, where you are at inside and what
valuables you have.
2. Install motion lighting and your home and, if affordable, an
alarm system. So in the event we can't be patrolling your
neighborhood at that moment, we'll be notified quickly of any intruders
to your home.
3. If you have trees, shrubs, plants, etc. around your home,
keep these trimmed and/or positioned so intruders or thieves will have a
difficult time hiding near your home, making it easier for you to see
when you look out or come home as well as for us when patrolling by.
4. As much as possible, try to limit your predictability.
If possible, vary the times you leave and return to and from your
home. If possible, vary your route in and away from your home as
well.
5. If you are away from home for more than the day or overnight
(weekend getaway, vacation, family illness requiring extended stay,
etc.) if possible have your neighbor, friend or family member pick up
your mail and check on your home. In addition, notify us on our
watch list (click here for more
information). (Homes/buildings on this list are checked by each
officer at least once per shift, more often if possible, depending on
other ongoing duties or circumstances).
If you and your family are able to follow these recommendations you
greatly reduce your risk of criminal activity occurring in or around
your home.
